"The assessment, evaluation, and research competency area (AER) focuses on the ability to use, design, conduct, and critique, qualitative and quantitative AER analyses; to manage organizations using AER processes and the results obtained from them; and to shape the political and ethical climate surrounding AER processes and uses on campus." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 8).
Asssessment is one of my proficient skills. At my time at Bluffton, I have had the opportunity to create several assessments and see them through. My first year as an HD, I had a floor in my building that was all female first year students. This was a trial for Bluffton to see if having these types of living communities would be beneficial. Because I am very interested in living learning communities, I created an assessment that was sent out to all of the women on this floor, as well as the men on the first year floor in another building. I was able to compile the results and create a report that was presented to the President’s Cabinet about residence life and the future for this type of community.
My second large assessment was creating a Residence Life Survey that was sent to all residential students on campus (over 600 students). This survey was meant to gauge what students wanted for the future and what types of things that our department can be doing better to help all students. This was a major survey for me, as I had to go through HSRB at Bluffton and learn the process for that. The dean of students/VP and the director of residence life will be compiling that information for the President’s Cabinet.
Assessment is important in my work as a supervisor and hall director, and I created and sent a survey in the middle of semester to my RAs to fill out on how I am doing. This allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses, as well as change things that needed to be changed for the next semester.
