"The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion competency area includes the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to create learning environments that are enriched with diverse views and people. It is also designed to create an institutional ethos that accepts and celebrates differences among people, helping to free them of any misconceptions and prejudices." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 10).
My middle school residents at dinner at the Junior Discovery Program at Georgetown.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is also one of my exemplary areas. I strive very hard to be inclusive in everything I do in my work when working with students and other staff members. By taking the Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs course, I was able to reflect upon what it means to be multiculturally competent and how I can apply that to my life and work. For my project, I created a course syllabus for undergraduate student K-12 education majors. The class would focus on multicultural reflection for these students, as well as how they can bring inclusion and multiculturism into their future classrooms.
In August, I attended Damascus Road: Antiracism Training at Bluffton University. This three day training, let me explore in depth how racism has affected our country as well as my life. We had the opportunity to divide into caucus groups based on our race. It was a neat experience to talk about racism from a White only perspective and have similar experiences with other people.
In March, I attended the State of the State Conference (email) at Bowling Green State University. I was able to attend some sessions about the LGBT Community as well as here Tim Wise speak. It was a neat experience to hear such a promininent author and speaker in the field, as well as interact with people who were not in the CSP program or in student affairs.
This year, I have decided to be a part of the Safe Spaces group on campus. It is really important to me that the students who don’t identify as straight are heard and feel welcomed onto this campus. I have attended numerous events have been a part of a small group of staff and students who meet weekly about their sexual identity.
This past summer, I worked for Junior Discovery Programs (photos) at Georgetown University. I spent a month in D.C with middle school students who came from all around the world. It was such an amazing experience to go explore the nation’s capital with students from China, Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, and so many other countries. Although this wasn’t working with college students, I was able to gain experiences on a college campus with diverse students.
