"The ethical professional practice competency area pertains to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to understand and apply ethical standards to one's work. While ethics is an integral component of all the competency areas, this competency area focuses specifically on the integration of ethics into all aspects of self and professional practice." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 12).
Ethical professional practice is highly important to me no matter where I work in the future. In the work that I do, I always try to be ethical in all my decisions, especially those regarding students and their well-being. If I know that something is not right, I will follow my gut and go with it.
When I respond to crisis in the hall, I must be ethical in the way that I report the violation or situation. Even if I don't agree with what the policy is or that it should be enforced, as a staff member at the institution, it is my job to enforce those standards. For example, open hours is our most enforced campus standard at Bluffton. Many students violate this rule by having someone of the opposite gender sleep over. Although I may not agree with the hours policy, I must enforce this rule whenever I see students in violation of it.
There was a suicidal situation that occurred this past year where a student needed more help than a staff member in the building was able to provide. I made sure that the dean and counselor knew about the student and that this student was able to seek additional help. It is my role to refer students when necessary to someone who can help them more than I can.
