"The Human and Organizational Resources competency area includes the knowledge, skills, and attitudes used in the selection, supervision, motivation, and formal evaluation of staff; conflict resolution; management of the politics of organizational discourse; and effective application of strategies and techniques associated with financial resources, facilities management, fundraising, technology use, crisis management, risk management, and sustainable resources." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 16).

I believe that I show exemplary skills in human and organizational resources. My internship at Bluffton really lends itself to developing these skills on a day-to-day basis. First of all, I am the hall director of the largest residence hall on campus (Ropp Hall), which houses about 230 students. I supervise eight wonderful RAs, who make my job worthwhile and who help me development my skills in this area. My supervision style is very laid back, and although I expect my RAs to get their jobs done well, I also make sure that we are all having fun on the job and we have positive relationships with each other. I do provide formal feedback to my RAs in evaluations each semester, which get put into their personal files. I hold weekly staff meetings to make sure that everyone is on task and to relay information as well as bond as a staff. I create staff agendas to provide this information and keep everything organized. I also work closely with buildings and grounds for eminence and cleaning of my building. I created a work order form that my RAs use to submit work orders to me, which I in turn pass on to buildings and grounds.
This spring, I chaired the committee for RA recruitment, overseeing the entire process. As the leader of this group, with members consisting of HDs and current RAs, we did advertising, informational sessions, interviews, and group process. I also researched questions for the RA and HD applications to see what area and conference institutions were doing. I modified those questions to fit the changing times of the role of an RA. We were able to hire a successful group of staff for next year, and this showed my skills in the area of selection.
Bluffton, being an institution affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA, is very conservative and against violence. With the recent college and school shootings, I felt that it was very important to get some active shooter training to our staff. I spoke with the VP/Dean of Students and we worked together to get the Bluffton Village Police to come and do a presentation at our biweekly RA In-services. For this training, I created an assessment to see what students have learned during this time, because crisis management is an important part of the work in student affairs.
