"The Leadership competency area addresses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a leader, whether it be a positional leader or a member of the staff, in both an individual capacity and within a process of how individuals work together effectively to envision, plan, effect change in organizations, and respond to internal and external constituencies and issues." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 22).
Leadership is an area that I proficient at with my skills. At Bluffton and at BGSU, I have had the opportunity to be a leader in many different ways. I am a leader to my RAs and one of my RAs has written a letter for me to describe how I show this.
First of all, myself and another Hall Director, created a week long series of events at Bluffton entitled "Let's Talk about Sex: Sexuality Series". This was done in March 2013, where we put on 5 events for our campus community all relating to sex and healthy relationships. This was well received in the campus community, however, as a leader of this series, I had to really figure out the mission and vision of the week, as well as understand the campus culture of Bluffton and what was going to be permissible. It was a huge learning experience, but the outcome was so rewarding and wonderful. To see our students engaged in these types of conversations was so wonderful.
My second activity is LDP at Bluffton, which is the Leadership Develpment Program. This is a special program that does two retreats a year as well as honors the leaders in the fall and spring for their hard work. A lot of planning goes into these events. Last year, we read and taught the book Leadership for Better World, which was really applicable in the Bluffton community.
