"The Student Learning and Development competency area addresses the concepts and principles of student development and learning theory. This includes the ability to apply theory to improve and inform student affairs practice, as well as understanding teaching and training theory and practice." (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 26).
Student learning and development is something that I strive to work on each day as I work with students. I informally assess their development and try and meet their needs with challenge and support. I know where the students I supervise are at in their development and am able to provide resources and activities to suit those needs.
I have also been developing my own identity and understand of who I am. The multicultural competence in student affairs course was imperative for this development of myself. The critical reflection papers made me think about my own understanding of race and identity, and allowed me to articulate that in the papers that I wrote. My last one in particular, critical reflection 3 was very important to me, as it expressed my growth in developing my own sexual identity and how far I have come in thinking about multicultural competence.
I have also developed a syllabus based upon a course I designed for students studying K-12 education. Part of the competency of student learning and develop is designing lesson plans and syllabi that fit student learning needs.
